Best CBD Oil: Ultimate Buyer’s Guide

Due to the overwhelming selection of products available, many people are on the hunt for the best CBD oil. CBD oils are a great natural option to promote homeostasis and support the relief of a broad spectrum of symptoms.

Whether you are looking for the best CBD oil for pain or the best CBD oil for anxiety, or other reasons, this CBD oil buyer’s guide will help you consider which of the best CBD oil options will help you meet based on your goals and how you use CBD oil.

Best CBD Oil for YOU

The best CBD oil for you will depend on your personal usage goals and preferences. When considering which product will be the best CBD oil for you, here are some factors to consider:

What are your goals for using CBD?

  • Relief from a particular symptom
  • Dietary supplementation
  • Homeostasis to balance the body

Is CBD oil potency more or less important than the budget?

  • Higher concentrations of CBD oil are generally more expensive
  • Full-spectrum CBD oil may be more effective at a lower potency

What CBD dosage do you want to take?

  • A smaller or less frequent dose of a more potent oil
  • A regular low dose may be enough to support homeostasis
  • Sometimes smaller CBD doses can be more effective than larger ones

What type of product is the best CBD oil delivery method for you?

  • Some product are more discreet
  • CBD products come in different flavors
  • The delivery method influences the amount of CBD absorbed by your body

If you still aren’t sure what you are looking to gain from CBD oil, you can try this quiz to help assess your goals for use.

What is the Best CBD Oil Delivery Method for You?

Some delivery methods allow the body to absorb more CBD than others; this effect is called bioavailability.4 When CBD is inhaled or taken sublingually as a spray or tincture, more CBD is delivered to the body at a faster rate.

When CBD is taken orally and processed through the digestive system, it can lose potency due to an effect called the first-pass metabolism. Oral supplements like CBD oil capsules and CBD gummies can still be great options as long as the metabolic consequences are considered when determining the best CBD oil dosage for you.

Best CBD Oil Tincture

The terms “CBD oil” and “CBD tincture” are often used interchangeably, but one key difference is how the product is taken. Tinctures are solutions that are administered sublingually; a dropper is filled with the product then empties under the tongue. It is held under the tongue for about a minute, then swallowed.

Among the best CBD oil tinctures, there is a wide diversity of potencies, flavors, and compositions. CBD isolate products will contain only the cannabinoid CBD and are best for those worried about a drug test failure due to CBD.

What are the Best CBD Oil Options for Potency

The potency is a significant consideration when it comes to finding the best CBD oil. Options range from receiving the best value for your dollar to getting the most potent concentration of CBD oil in a single container.

Most Potent CBD Oil

Some individuals and symptoms benefit from very high doses of CBD. The most potent CBD oils will be more than 1000mg per 30ml for tinctures. These concentrated CBD oils can get expensive but may offer the most symptom relief for some psychotic disorders, spasticity conditions, and cancer-related pain.1,2,4,6

Natural CBD Tincture 1500mg

No High 1500mg CBD tincture is a high-potency full-spectrum CBD option.

Best Full Spectrum CBD Oil

Full-spectrum CBD oils can have an entourage effect that allows CBD to work through more biological pathways. A full-spectrum CBD oil will contain other non-psychoactive cannabinoids like CBG, CBC, THCV, along with terpene plant compounds like myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, and linalool (among others).2

CBD isolates are oils that contain only the cannabinoid CBD. CBD isolate oils may need to be taken at a higher dosage than full-spectrum CBD oils because they do not travel as many biological pathways.

[Product Description to Come]

Since full spectrum extraction is more complicated than extracting CBD isolate, full-spectrum products are generally a little more expensive. Many people find that fill spectrum products are worth this extra cost because they can be more effective at lower doses.

If you aren’t feeling results with CBD only products, full-spectrum products are something to try. They are free from THC but include other compounds from the hemp plant like non-psychoactive cannabinoids other than CBD, and terpenes. Together this entourage of cannabinoids and terpenes can provide fast relief of symptoms when taken sublingually.

What Does CBD Stand For (and other terminology)?

Cannabidiol

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most abundant cannabinoids found in cannabis. Unlike THC, you will not get high from taking CBD. There are extensive research and clinical evidence that CBD benefits a wide array of symptoms.2 CBD has powerful neuroprotective, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. It can also help many psychological conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and schizophrenia, and reduce seizures in epileptic conditions.

Tetrahydrocannabinol

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the other main cannabinoid in cannabis. THC is the cannabinoid that will get you high. In hemp, THC must be less than 0.3%, but marijuana type cannabis contains low to high levels of THC are found in marijuana type cannabis. Despite its recreational reputation, THC has a wide array of health benefits and can be more effective in alleviating some types of pain that are not relieved by CBD.2 THC is also a potent anti-nausea cannabinoid.

Cannabigerol

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that is abundant in hemp. It has anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. It also exerts antidepressant effects, stimulated appetite, and has antibacterial and antifungal activity.2

Cannabichromene

Cannabichromene (CBC) is a minor non-psychoactive cannabinoid with antianxiety and antidepressant properties. It can also reduce inflammation from inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) and has antibacterial and antifungal properties.2

Cannabinol

Cannabinol (CBN) is a minor non-psychoactive cannabinoid formed by THC degradation. CBN has sedative effects that can help improve sleep and combat insomnia.2

Cannabidivarin

Cannabidivarin (CBDV)  is a minor non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has anticonvulsant activity and promotes bone formation and fracture healing.2

Tetrahydrocannabivarin

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is a non-psychoactive version of THC that can work through the CB1 and CB2 receptors.2 THCV has benefits for epilepsy and may also reduce pain sensation and inflammation, and reduce appetite.

Acidic Cannabinoids

Acidic cannabinoids are cannabinoids that have not been decarboxylated into their neutral forms. Evidence is emerging that these acidic versions of cannabinoids may provide health benefits, but neutral cannabinoids like CBD are generally regarded as the “active” form of a cannabinoid. One example of a useful acidic cannabinoid is THCA. THCA is an acidic version of THC that is non-psychoactive and has anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea effects.2

Terpenes

Terpenes are non-cannabinoid plant compounds that can work alone or with cannabinoids to influence the endocannabinoid system.2 When terpenes are included in full-spectrum CBD oils, they can help the product pass the blood-brain barrier and increase bioavailability. Terpenes can work alone to alleviate symptoms like anxiety and inflammation, so new terpene only products are becoming popular.

Milligrams

Milligrams (mg) are a measurement of mass or weight; the milligrams per milliliter of CBD determine how concentrated or potent a product is.

Milliliters

Milliliters (ml) are a measurement of volume, with 30ml equal to almost one ounce.

Bioavailability

Bioavailability is how much of the CBD consumed reaches the bloodstream. Inhaling CBD leads to the high bioavailability of around 31%, while orally consumed CBD only delivers about 6% of the CBD consumed to the bloodstream.4

Homeostasis

Homeostasis is a broad term for balance in a biological system like your body. CBD supplements aim to balance cannabinoid deficits in the body, so the endocannabinoid system works as it should.

What is CBD oil, and will CBD oil get you high?

Hemp and marijuana are both types of cannabis, but CBD from hemp will not get you high. THC is the intoxicating cannabinoid in marijuana. We’ve written an extensive guide for those wondering what CBD oil is. This guide will take you from the basics of what is CBD oil all the way to the complex way it works in your body.

How is CBD oil made, and where does CBD oil come from?

Unlike in retail brick-and-mortar dispensaries, CBD oils legally sold online through the US are made from hemp, which may be sourced from the US, Canada, Europe, or China. Manufacturers avoid Chinese hemp because it is often contaminated with pesticides or heavy metals.

The best CBD oil manufacturers will use GMP production methods and perform third-party laboratory testing to ensure quality.

Different extraction methods can be used to produce CBD oil. Supercritical CO2 extraction is ideal because it will not leave behind chemical residues as solvent extractions can. Ethanol extraction can also produce high-quality CBD oil with minimal chemical residues when appropriately performed.

How long does CBD oil last?

Bioavailability will differ depending on the delivery method, metabolism, and symptom intensity. In general, vaped (inhaled CBD) or sublingual tinctures will be felt fastest, in about 10-20 minutes, and last around 3 hours. CBD edibles and capsules may take over an hour to feel any effect but last longer in the body. CBD topicals may act faster than edibles but last for hours. We have written an ultimate guide to how long CBD takes to work for you to learn more about the topic.

What color is the Best CBD oil?

The color of a CBD oil varies based on a manufacturer’s extraction methods and formulations. CBD oil can be transparent or golden. Some CBD products will be green if the extraction process does not remove chlorophyll. Oils that contain that plant pigment can have a bad taste so that most manufacturers will remove it during the extraction process.

How much CBD oil should I take?

Dosage Calculator

Consumers should always start low and only gradually increase the dosage if effects aren’t being felt after five to ten days of regular use. You can estimate your dose using our free CBD dosage calculator.

Please remember this calculator is a tool to help you calculate how many milligrams of CBD are in each milliliter of CBD, considering estimated bioavailability. This calculator is not a substitute for medical advice from a doctor and is not intended to treat, diagnose, or prescribe a particular product or dosage.

Calculating Dose for CBD Oil Tincture

Calculating the dose for a CBD oil tincture is very easy. To calculate how many mg in a drop of CBD oil, some simple math is required. For a 50 ml bottle of 600 mg CBD oil tincture, the total milligrams of CBD in the bottle is divided by the volume of CBD oil tincture. The result is the milligrams of CBD in a dropper.

[Total CBD in the bottle] ÷ [Number of milliliters in the bottle] = mg of CBD in a dropper
600 mg CBD ÷ 50 ml bottle size = 12 mg CBD per dropper

Each dropper has a volume of approximately one milliliter, and one drop is about 0.05 ml. If one milliliter is divided by 20 to get one drop, the milligrams per dropper can be divided by 20 to determine how many mg in a drop of CBD oil.

[Total mg CBD per dropper] ÷ 20 = mg of CBD per drop
12 mg CBD oil per dropper ÷ 20 = 0.6 mg CBD oil per drop

If a total of about 25 mg CBD is desired, it would take about two droppers of 600 mg CBD oil tincture to reach that dose. If a total daily dose of 50 mg CBD is desired, two droppers of CBD oil tincture could be taken twice a day.

Calculating Dose for Refillable Vape Tanks

If a CBD vape liquid contains 1000 mg per 100 milliliters (ml) of a bottle, there would be 10 mg CBD per 1 ml. Next, determine the size of the vape’s tank and multiply it by the amount of CBD in 1 ml. A 2 ml tank would contain 20 mg CBD so a patient looking for a dose of 40 mg CBD would need to smoke two tanks of CBD vape juice.

  • Anticonvulsant1
  • Anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other psychological conditions1,6

How does it feel to take CBD oil?

You won’t feel high when CBD kicks in because it is not psychoactive like THC. When you are taking a dose that is right for your symptoms, you will feel a relief of those symptoms. If you feel side effects like stomach discomfort, it is a sign that the dose is too strong and should be reduced, or another type of product can be tried that may not produce those side effects. Because supplements are a personalized health product, the right kind of product, and the correct dose will depend on your body, your symptom intensity, and your preferences.

What are the side effects of CBD oil, and is CBD oil safe?

The World Health Organization has reported that CBD is relatively safe with positive therapeutic potential, but human studies are limited and may not be appropriate for some individuals.2 It can have drug interactions and interact negatively with some health conditions, so a doctor should always be consulted for an individual medical opinion.

Side effects like constipation and upset stomach are possible and are often a sign that an oil dosage is too high. We’ve written the ultimate guide to CBD side effects, where you can learn more about potential drug interactions as well as the benefits of taking oil.

Consumers are encouraged to look for producers that publish lab test results. These published results are a high mark of transparency and brand confidence and give you proof that the company you are purchasing from has your safety in mind.

Testimonials

From the Author

“When I started to write about CBD oil products, I got curious and felt I needed to do some personal research to understand the CBD oil benefits and potential side effects fully. I have multiple health concerns like anxiety, pain, migraine, and essential tremor.

I found that taking one CBD gummy in the morning and one in the evening helped reduce my tremor and general levels of pain and anxiety. When I feel stronger symptoms of anxiety, I like to use a CBD oil vape as my ‘panic attack rescue inhaler.’

I have also found symptom relief with marijuana, but CBD products are best for during the day when I am working and do not want to feel high. CBD products are also more convenient because I do not live full time in a state where cannabis is legal and would not qualify under state law for their restrictive medical marijuana program.”
